“You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”
― Ansel Adams
I personally agree with the quote above. I can't tell you how many time I have heard from some person these words when they see my equipment. "Wow that is a nice camera and lens, it must take great pictures." Well the camera, it is only a tool which allows us as photographers to catch a moment in time. Just because you have an expensive stove in your home, does it mean it makes great food? The photograph above was shot using my iPhone and it is comparable to any sunrise photo I have taken with my more expensive equipment. So it is experience, intuition, the play of light and a specific moment in time that make a good photograph, not the equipment. An expensive camera or lens only allows us to expand on the what is already there when we try to capture that moment and make it a memory we can revisit for all of our days.
I like to shoot things and people that I am passionate about. My daughter is a dancer so of course I like to shoot dance photos. The grace and movement of dance is something very special. Pets have always been a part of my life and as I get older they become more special, just like the people in my life. I love the emotion and life that pets bring to our life and I try to capture all the aspects of each individual animal. Some may be serious, playful or silly but all of them share our lives and as humans our lives are made better and richer because of them.
Because of some friends I have become involved with shooting equestrian events which I really love. The speed and power of a horse matched with the patience and skill of a rider leave me in awe as it is something I cannot do myself. But when I can capture a rider and horse working in tandem and performing a beautiful dressage routine or leaping an obstacle as if they were one, that is when I feel lots of personal satisfaction. It is my wish and my goal that my photographs can convey the same to the casual viewer.
And some new friends have introduced me to car shows and racing automobiles and motorcycles. But it is not just the equipment, it is the time, passion and the people themselves that I am interested in. Each and every vehicle is a rolling piece of artwork, whether it is a daily driver, a show car or it is raced on the weekends.
